Description
Potassium Chloride Injection is a sterile, non-pyrogenic solution of Potassium Chloride in water for Injection. It contains no preservative.
Indications/Uses
Potassium Chloride is that salt most frequently employed when the action of Potassium ion is desired. It is the salt used in states of hypokalemia or hypochlormic alkalosis, which occurs as a result, or diarrhea, vomiting, treatment with diuretics particularly with thiazides, and as a consequence of adrenal steroid therapy. It is to use to elevate potassium blood levels, as antidote to digitalis intoxication and as diuretic. Potassium Chloride is particularly valuable in relieving symptoms of hypokalemic periodic paralysis, a disease characterized by muscular weakness. An increase in the daily intake of Potassium decreases the risk of stroke-associated mortality. It may be administered together with sodium chloride and/or glucose for the correction of severe hypokalemia occurring in association with sodium and fluid depletion.
Dosage/Direction for Use
If dilution is required, use Sterile Water for Injection or other suitable parental solvents to dilute Potassium Chloride 2 mEq/mL Injection prior to administration.
Adults: When plasma potassium is above 2.5 mEq/L: 10 mEq/hr to a total dose of 200 mEq/day.
When plasma potassium level is less than 2 mEq/L: 40 mEq/hr to a total daily dose of 400 mEq/day.
Children: 3 mEq/kg: the volume of solution is proportional to body size.
Acute Hypokalemia: Doses up to 100 mEq may be given by slow intravenous infusion with ECG control at a rate not exceeding 20 mEq/hr of a solution not exceeding 40 mEq/L.
Contraindications
